Grades 1-6 Catechist

Purpose of Position:  To facilitate the faith formation of St. John’s young people assisted by a prescribed curriculum and personal example.


  • Teach lessons as directed in current curriculum as provided.
  • Attend catechist workshops and inservices as scheduled.
  • Plan and participate in at least ONE class-appropriate service project during the year.
  • Communicate regularly with students’ parents and/or guardians.
  • Respect and use wisely classroom facilities and program supplies.
  • Follow religious education policies as described in teacher and family handbook.

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Enjoys being with young people.
  • Has a basic knowledge of Catholic faith and traditions.
  • Willing to share one’s personal faith and traditions with young people.
  • Prompt and dependable.
  • Good role model.      

Amount of Time Required:  Two and a quarter hours weekly; one in preparation and one & one quarter in classroom.

Length of Commitment:  September through May.

When Work is Performed:  Wednesdays

Training Provided:  Grades 1-6 Coordinator and/or RE staff

All volunteers working with children are required to have:

  • Passed a background check
  • Completed VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children training as mandated by the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis
  • Must sign a Code of Conduct annually
