Sunday School Catechist

Purpose of Position:  To facilitate the faith formation of St. John’s pre-school students by following a prescribed curriculum and personal example.


  • Teach lessons as directed in current curriculum as provided.
  • Seek approval from the Sunday School Coordinator for substantial departures from the curriculum.
  • Attend teachers workshops and inservice as scheduled.
  • Plan and/or participate in class stewardship project.
  • Communicate regularly with student’s family.
  • Respect classrooms, facilities, and supplies.  Make sure classroom is left in the same or better condition than when you found it.
  • Follow religious education policies as described in teacher and family handbook.

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Willingness to share your Catholic faith and traditions with young people.
  • A basic knowledge of Catholic faith and traditions.
  • Prompt and dependable.
  • Able to communicate well.
  • Able to relate well with pre-school children and their families.
  • Enjoys being with pre-school aged children.
  • Good role model.      

Amount of Time Required:  Two hours weekly; one in preparation and one in classroom.

Length of Commitment:  September through May of current year.

When Work is Performed:  Sundays during the chosen Mass

  • Passed a background check
  • Completed VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children training as mandated by the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis
  • Sign Code of Conduct annually
