Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation prior to receiving First Eucharist is God's gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confessing our sins, we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins.
With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. The sacrament helps us stay close to the truth that we cannot live without God. "In Him, we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).
Formation and preparation to celebrate First Reconciliation and First Communion usually begins at the second grade level but families are encouraged not to take this step simply because your child is the “right age.” Instead, you are to consider if now is the right time for your child and your family. We encourage you to take the next step if your child is ready to prepare for the sacraments and you are ready to accept responsibility for helping your child fulfill the requirements and help your whole family draw closer to Jesus. If you have questions please email the faith formation team.
